You can also send feedback straight from the app — open Settings → Feedback & Support. The app shows you exactly which technical details are attached before anything is sent, and your message stays anonymous unless you add a reply address.
When you write, please include
- Your iOS version and device model (e.g. iPhone 15, iOS 18).
- The app version (Settings → About).
- A short description of what you did, what you expected, and what happened.
- If relevant, a screenshot — it often says more than words.
Frequently asked questions
Does the app work offline, out at sea?
Yes. Sailor’s Companion is offline-first: logging, the status wheel, your track and statistics all work without a connection. Only the weather forecast and the map tiles need the internet — when you’re offline the app keeps recording and clearly marks cached or unavailable data as such.
Why does the app ask for “Always” location access?
“Always” lets the app record your track in the background while your phone is in your pocket. If you choose “While Using”, the app still works, but only records while it’s in the foreground. You can change this any time in iOS Settings → Privacy → Location Services.
How is the distance sailed calculated?
From your real, recorded GPS track (filtered, point to point) — never from straight lines between log entries. That’s why the figure reflects the water you actually covered.
Is the map an official nautical chart?
No. The map is a general map with OpenSeaMap seamarks. It is a support tool, not a certified navigation device, and must not be your primary means of navigation. Always navigate with official, up-to-date charts and approved equipment.
Can I connect the app to my boat’s instruments?
Yes. Sailor’s Companion reads an NMEA 2000 network over your onboard Wi-Fi, either straight from a gateway or through Signal K. Speed and heading then come from the boat’s own instruments instead of the phone, and wind, depth, current, rudder and autopilot appear on the navigation panel. The connection checks itself and reconnects on its own if it drops.
AIS vessels nearby are drawn on the chart, each with a heading predictor and a detail card. That is information only: the app calculates no closest point of approach and raises no collision warning. It does not replace a proper lookout or a certified AIS display.
Is there an Apple Watch app?
Yes, and it is included. The same status wheel on your wrist: your status with SOG and COG at a glance, quick actions like Tack and Jibe, and the trip in numbers — without taking the phone out of your pocket. Complications put the voyage on the watch face you already use, and anything you log out of range lands on the phone as soon as the two are back together.
What does Premium include, and how do I manage it?
The app is free and stays fully usable without Premium: the logbook, the status wheel, the track and the statistics, the chart with its sea marks, the anchor watch, person overboard, the navigation panel and GPX and CSV export — with one logbook at a time.
Premium adds:
- Offline charts — download your cruising area and use the same chart, with the same sea marks, with no connection at all.
- The PDF logbook — the whole voyage as a print-ready document: the track on a map, the log, and the statistics.
- KML track export — open your route in Google Earth or Google Maps.
- Several logbooks at once — a boat, a season, a charter, each in its own book.
- iCloud backup — a copy of your data in your own iCloud, under your Apple ID.
- Sync across your devices — logbooks, tracks and entries stay together on iPhone and iPad.
- The signed logbook — sign and lock entries so they are recorded tamper-evident.
- Arming the anchor watch — setting the swing circle is free; letting the alarm keep watch is Premium.
Premium comes in two plans: monthly, or yearly at a lower price per year. Both are billed automatically at the price shown in the app — every month or every year — until you cancel, and you pick which one when you subscribe. Apple is the merchant, so you view, change, switch or cancel it in your App Store account settings, at any time. See our Terms & EULA for the renewal details.
How do I back up my logbooks?
iCloud backup is a Premium feature. Switch it on in Settings and a copy of your data is stored in your own iCloud account, under your Apple ID — we have no access to your backups.
Without Premium your logbooks live on the device. GPX and CSV export are free, so you can always take your track and your entries off the phone yourself.
Which languages does the app support?
Ten: German, English, French, Italian, Croatian, Slovenian, Slovak, Czech, Polish and Ukrainian. The app, its interface and the PDF voyage report are translated into all ten. It follows the language your iPhone is set to, and you can also pick one yourself under Settings → App language.
How do I delete my data?
Everything lives on your device: delete individual entries, logbooks or your track in the app, or remove all of it by uninstalling. If you’ve enabled iCloud backup, you can also remove the backup from your iCloud storage. See our Privacy Policy for details.
